Today's Life and Culture: World of Threads Comes Together

World of Threads Comes Together. To celebrate Oakville's 150th Anniversary, and as a precursor to the launch of the World of Threads Festival, members of various fibre arts guilds came together to create something new out of something old. Using a variety of methods including weaving, hooking, tatting, quilting, stitching and beading, the artists recreated the Frederick Arthur Verner (1826-1928) oil painting "The Mill on the Sixteen".  A copy of the painting was divided into 16 sections. The five participating guilds were asked to translate their piece of the puzzle, using their craft. For the most part, each artist worked in secret, not seeing the original and not knowing what sections the other groups were preparing. The entire piece took 250 hours to recreate and is currently being exhibited at the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate.  To learn more about the upcoming World of Threads Festival visit www.worldof threads2007.cachelan.com.  Above from left are Ward 5 Councillor Marc Grant, artists Julie Verma, Gail Inglis, Margaret Ballantyne-Power, Dawne Rudman, Anne Harrison, Jane Coryell, Ixchel Suarez, Susan Semeczko and Dennis DeCarli of The Framing Den.
